Manuscripts Preservation & Conservation

Manuscripts are the first thing that comes to attention when looking at ancient literary heritage. These are like the wasps of literature that reflect ancient cultures. It is the duty of every citizen of India to collect and preserve such literary treasures.
Our Indian culture includes many languages, cultures, literatures, and manuscripts of various types. Manuscripts containing such precious knowledge can be found in monasteries, religious centers, homes, and institutions, spanning thousands of palm leaf and paper manuscripts.

In order to provide better protection to the manuscripts, such as those collected from the beginning in Sri Kshetra Sravanabelagola, a huge manuscript repository has been built. Thousands of manuscripts of Tattva, Purana, Kavya, drama literature, Ayurveda, astrology, Vastu, and classical works of sculpture have been collected and preserved.
The Institute is engaged in publication and research work with this collection of ancient palm leaf and paper manuscripts. Many great texts are still in manuscript form and yet to be published. Descriptive indexes of Kannada, Prakrit, and Sanskrit manuscripts have been published in seven volumes to facilitate the study of the manuscripts collected by this Manuscript Department.

About 51,000 Jain manuscripts found in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh have been indexed under the National Jain Manuscript Registration Scheme, a major project of the Central Government. Currently, projects given by the National Mission for Manuscripts, New Delhi, and the Cultural Department of the Central Government are in progress.
